peer feedback of opening sequence of children's film.

1. conventions of an opening sequence: title production name and companies, characters established, children's themes and ideas.

2. specific genre conventions: fantasy/action, intense music to fit children's film genre.

3. variety and quality of camera work: quite a few different shots could be more advanced, good use of transitions.

4. use of special effects - animation: good use of bullet time and voice overs,

5. sound quality and effectiveness: sound track could have been better and would of been better if it did not cover the dialog. however the sound track was good.

6. use of mise-en scene: could have used costume and better/more props, good use of environment they were in,

7. use of editing: used a lot of editing and effects but transitions could have been improved,

8. best features from the opening sequence: the storyline and narrative, the use of dialog, the idea of the imaginary friend, the theme of the narrative,

self evaluation for children's film. some of the conventions we included in our production were, a title and names of producers and actors and production company names, another convention we used is the establishment of main and sub characters in the first 5 minutes of the movie. the specific conventions to fit the genre which was fantasy/action/family/adventure, we used were, intense music to fit the genre type and to add to the mood and atmosphere to the product. we used some variety of camera work to capture the main essence of our opening scene. some of the shots we used were; establishing shots, these are commonly used in children's film to introduce the main characters in the opening scene so the audience are aware quickly who the film develops around. another camera shot we used was reaction shots and close ups, again this also its the genre of a children's film and again it makes it clearer to the audience what the characters are feeling and are like. we used some special effects in our opening sequence for example, we used bullet time to emphasis a fight scene and to make it visually interesting to our target audience. we did not wear costume and the props that we used could have been better. however we did use the set and environment we were in well. for the editing aspect of our opening sequence we used a lot of jump cuts to emphasis the action in the scene and to add to the tense atmosphere. however the transitions we used to cut from shot to shot could have been more clear and more smooth.

Adill - Childrens Film Opening Sequence - Finding Nemo

Pixar Animation Studios Logo

The walt Disney castle logo is show first of all before the
opening credits or anything else , this instantly denotes that the film is a walt diney production connoting quality animation and the target audience of children ( U, PG ) this is followed by the well know Pixar animation studio logo which is a further sign of a quality animated film.

Close Up revealing second charecter

The opening shot is underwater
it is an establishing shot tilting slightly upwards to show the surface of the
water whilst panning slowly left, this shot instantly sets the scene in the
viewers mind it pans to a rock formation and you can see a fish.then there is
dialogue between the fish and someone else, the shot cuts to a close up of the
rock and the fish from the other angle reavealing another fish right behind the

first, we can tell that the second fish is femal due to her voice. The dialogue
in this shot explains who the fish are aswell as setting the story, it then
cuts to a panning shot of the sea floor all around the rock and you can see
loads of different brigtly coloured fish all swimming about doing ‘human’ activities,
this shot is very colourfull and exiting and would appeal to the films target
audience of 3-12yr olds, when it is cut to this shot you can hear diagetic
sounds of laughter and fun connoting to the audience that this is a fun happy
place to be. The non diagetic sound is very peacfull and calm soundtrack
creating a feeling of calmness and serenity and makes you feel like your

floating underwater.

Half Term Homework Blogging

In an opening scene of a childrens film there is usually non-diagetic sound being played in the background for the audience. this music will sometimes indicate what genre the film will be. Toy Story is an animation, fantasy, adventure. on occasions, there are voiceovers to describe what is happening and the narration can often set the scene. music is also crucial in the opening scene as it shows what kind of genre it will be. in an action film, like toy story, the music is high tempo and you know what your going to get in the film.
the bright colour and cartoon characters attracts children to the film. it also makes it the film more interesting and exciting to watch if the opening scene is of good quality.

One convention that this opening sequence has that it is domestic which is commonly used in children’s films; therefore the audience would expect that the target audience is for children. The genre of this film is Animation, Action, Adventure; Comedy which again would appeal to a younger audience. The characterisation of the characters would appeal to a younger audience as well for example; the blob character called “bob”, he seems to be stupid and dim witted, this would make the audience laugh at his foolish actions. Another convention used in this opening sequence is that it is made by “DreamWorks” which is associated with producing films that would appeal to a younger audience.
It also has the convention of including a hero and a villain, and the hero overcomes the villain in the end to conclude on a happy ending which again would please and appeal to a younger audience. The TBBF for this film is “U”, which implies that it is suitable for any audiences but in particular children. This film does fit with the genre of children’s film because it has the main elements within it to imply and portray that it is targeted at a younger audience.

Convention of opening scene - childrens film

Music/voiceover

In an opening scene there is usually non-diegetic music in the background. This can sometimes be a theme tune which is the regular music for that particular film. It can sometimes be a voiceover where someone is narrating at the start of the film. However most of the time a certain piece of music is put together and inserted in the scene. This type of music can depend on the genre. For instance ina an action genre the music will usually be high tempo, tense and involve loud instruments. If the genre is a fantasy then the music is usually calm, light-hearted snd childlike.

Opening sequence conventions for 2 different films

Up.the genre of the film "Up", is an adventure, fantasy ands action animated children's film.
the content of the opening scene involves a number of things. firstly, characters are introduced to the audience such as Carl the elderly man and his wife to be Ellie. the opening scene shows these characters in their youth. there is also a title sequence and the first scene in shown in black and white which indicates that the start of the film is set in a olden time era. the opening scene of "Up" is also engaging. this attracts the audience right from the start and makes them want to continue viewing the film.
"Up" is a film which involves a fantasy type genre and this involves beings and events that could not exist in real life. conventions used in this film are: talking animals, magical powers etc.ß
This film is also an adventure type genre. an adventure genre usually involves exciting stories with new experiences or exotic locations.
there is an element of action in the film "Up". for example high energy chases and fast paced/dramatic music.
The british board of film classification. Is a independent non governmental body that has been classifying films since the 1930's. There are 6 different classifications.

U: stands for universal, classification would be suitable for audiences 4 and over, they should contain a positive moral framework and should offer reassurance counter balances to any violent threat or horror. the language should not insult or offend the audience in any way.

PG: stands for parental giudance, suitable for children over the age of 8 and should not contain mateiral that would offend or upset younger or more sensitive audience. however parents are advised to see whether it is suitable to watch. there would only be some moderate bad language, some natural nudity with no sexual content and sexual activity may be implied but not shown in detail. Our children's film will be in the PG category as it is aimed at 6+ we decided not to use the U classification as both classifications hit our target audience, but PG will allow us a bit more freedom in what we film whereas if we were trying to make a U our film would have to be very restricted, to retain within the U classification.

12/12A: this means that the film is suitable for audiences 12 and younger, the 12A classification only exists in film and not dvd. moderate language is allowed and some offensive words such as "fuck" but only infrequently. nudity is allowed but must not explicit and must be brief. mature themes are acceptable but there treatment must be suitable for young teenagers.
15: this means audiences who are 15 or over are allowed to view the content in the film. it can include moderate language and use of some frequent bad language such as "shit" etc..., can also contain nudity scenes and sexual refrences but no detail of explicit pictations. can have strong violence and themes but without focusing on detail foe example "blood and decapitation"

18: this means people 18 and over and watch the material included in the film, these can contain use of strong frequent language and strong sexual scenes both implied and suggested, can focus on violence and detail and can contain themes of a adult nature. also can contain drug use and discrimination between characters and are allowed imitable behaviour. this also applies to the classification of R18, this uses much more of the conventions mentioned above and only people over 18 and 19 are allowed to view this certain type of film.

operation nugget

we learnt for the next product we do we will improve on our camera and ensure our filming footage is of a higher quality. next time we edit, we will take more care and put more time towards editing our film footage i.e camera shots: we zoomed in too much when it was unnecessary. also we would use the tripod so it wont be shaky. the clip was too long, we need to manage the duration of the clip as it is only a preliminary.
